DOWNTOWN SOCIAL CLUB For almost 40 years, Calvary has hosted clients from St. Elizabeth's psychiatric hospital in SE Washington for weekly activities. Every Thursday from 9:30am to 12:30pm, hospital staff bring a group of clients to Calvary in order to give them opportunities for recreational therapy. Clients can sing, play bingo, make crafts, get exercise, watch movies, and play games through the Downtown Social Club program. Volunteers are needed each week to help set up for programming, to portion the lunch, and to create community through client interaction.

ESL Calvary offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes each Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at the church. Intermediate classes are 9:00-10:30am, and beginner classes are 10:30am-12:00pm. No knowledge of English is necessary for the beginner classes. Beginning September 8, we will offer beginner and intermediate classes each Wednesday night 6:30-8:00pm.

CALVARY WOMEN'S SHELTER Located just 5 blocks from our church, Calvary Women's Shelter serves the needs of homeless women in our neighborhood. Started in 1983 in the basement of our church building, the shelter later moved to a more sufficient facility but it kept the name. Calvary Baptist Church members volunteer to prepare and serve an evening meal on rotation at the shelter. For more information about the shelter visit their website.

HOMELESS OUTREACH Our church partners with the Downtown Cluster of Congregations to connect homeless individuals with critical services such as food, clothing, shelter, legal and financial assistance. Every Thursday from 9:00am to 4:00pm, a social worker from the Downtown Cluster of Congregations assists individuals out of Calvary's office.

GLBTQ OUTREACH Calvary strives to be a welcoming place for all people seeking fellowship with Christ. We reach out to the GLBTQ community in several different ways, but one event that our church always look forward to is packing the Calvary booth at the annual DC Capital Pride street festival, handing out "a different kind of Baptist" stickers and offering communion to those who desire to receive it.

LOCAL MISSIONS In addition to our regular volunteer opportunities, Calvary members and friends are encouraged to serve at any of a number of local justice-centered non-profits such as Christ House, DC Central Kitchen, Food and Friends, Martha's Table, So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.), and The Family Place, just to name a few.

If you would like to learn more about any of these ministries of Calvary Baptist Church, email Rev. Edgar Palacios.
